Lynch Law & all its phases

In this blog, I will be using the text Southern Horrors, written by Ida. B. Wells and edited by Jacqueline Jones Royster. Ida B. Wells was an African American who achieved national an international dame as a journalist, public speaker, and community activist. In this book, the main idea talked about is lynching, which is a barbaric and violent form of punishment which consists of hanging the person with a rope and shooting at him. It was a very common practice at that time and was used most times when a black man raped a white woman.

One part of the text that I found really interesting and also really important is where it says " But when the victim is a colored woman, it is different (Wells pg.58)". I found it important and interesting as it talks about how and in which circumstances lynching was done. In this case we see that it was really unfair because when a black man raped a white woman, he was going to be lynched. But on the other hand, if ever a white man lynched a colored woman, the matter would be ignored as the ladies had no right to voice their concerns, and at that time, it was all about white supremacy. White supremacy is the fact that white people had most power and were always dominating everywhere in the United States.White supremacy somehow frightened most of the black people, thus they didn't have the will to affront them. Ida B. Wells i not only fight for her people ( African American) but for the whole nation, as she knew that all that lynching was really unfair, and if stopped, could be the beginning of peace between black and white people.

So we can see here that the main idea is lynching, how it was used, and also the battle to stop it. There is also the idea of white supremacy, and also the injustice that the Afro-American suffered.

  1. Hey Rudy,I like the fact that you introduce the text, and quickly gave me a brief summary about lynching. This is a great piece , what caught my attention was that you used the word barbaric I believe that you should of elaborated more on how was it barbaric and could of mentioned it once more in the text. I was kind I lost in the 2 nd paragraph where u stated Ida b wells I was confused for second cause you just threw her name in there you should of given the reader a heads up that you was going to quote something she said. By the way you used your used your citation correctly. Great piece though it really caught my attention. - Danny B
